Raktamokshana Karma (The Therapeutic Procedure of Bloodletting)
In the Ayurvedic system of medicine, the therapeutic procedure of Raktamokshana Karma (bloodletting) is considered a crucial regimental therapy. Its application is particularly emphasized during the autumn season, aiming to purify the body Pitta Dosha which has same quality as Rakta Dhatu, that may become imbalanced due to seasonal changes. Additionally, Raktamokshana Karma is recommended for the treatment of Raktaja Roga, which refers to diseases caused by or affecting the tissues of blood. It is told in Ayurvedic text that if any disease which is not responding to Doshic treatment it should be considered as Raktaj roga and should be treated by Raktamokshana.
This therapeutic approach involves two main types of procedures:
Pracchana Karma (scrapping or scarification)
Siravedha Karma/Suchi (vein puncture)
Both methods utilize sharp instruments, with Siravedha Karma resulting in a relatively higher amount of blood volume compared to the more localized and superficial Pracchana Karma.
For patients with delicate constitutions, alternative methods of Raktamokshana Karma are available, including
Jaloka Avacharana (medical leech therapy or hirudotherapy)
Shringa Yantra
Alabu Yantra
Ghati yantra
In the ancient realm of Ayurveda, where the harmonious balance of the doshas is paramount to holistic health, leech therapy, or “Jalaukaavacharana,” has held a significant place. This age-old practice finds its roots in the traditional Ayurvedic texts, providing a nuanced understanding of the various types of leeches, their effects on doshas, and the intricacies of their mode of action in Ayurvedic medicine.
